Vishuddha Chakra: The Spacious Throat

Vishuddha Chakra – The Spacious Throat

This coming week we are working on the fifth chakra in the body, Vishuddha, the throat chakra.   Our yoga postures open the throat and ease out and massage the neck and release tension in the jaw and head.  We also breathe with Ujjayi breath, conscious of the sound that resonates at the back of the throat, which serves to lengthen the breath.

The throat chakra relates to language and communication and the voice.  And, in addition, the ability to listen to others.  When the chakra is balanced, our ability to communicate and speak is clear.  When the heart chakra is also balanced, we speak from the heart, with love and kindness; and speak for what we believe in.  A blocked throat chakra can literally leave us,’ lost for words’.  Other symptoms include, but are not limited to the following examples:  A lump in the throat, a sore throat and a stiff jaw.

The element Ether is associated with this chakra.  We can conceptualise this as spaciousness around the throat and neck, where the voice can vibrate and the breath can flow.  The colour associated with this chakra is light blue, the fifth colour in the light spectrum.
