King Dancer’s Pose

Our balance this week is King Dancer’s Pose, or “Natarajasana” in Sanskrit.  It is a pose named after Nataraja, the cosmic dancer form of the Hindu God Shiva. This pose is renowned for its elegance and the strength it demands, embodying both grace and poise.

Benefits and Technique

King Dancer’s Pose offers many physical benefits. It strengthens the legs, core, and back while enhancing flexibility in the hips, shoulders, and spine. The pose also challenges and improves balance and coordination.

How to do it

To perform King Dancer’s Pose, start by standing tall with feet hip-width apart. Shift your weight onto the right leg and bend the opposite left knee and bring the knee up in front of the body, hugging it up towards the abdomen.  Interlace the fingers around the front of the left shin, and hold the knee up high,.  Stack the shoulders above the hips.  Gently take your hands away and keep the knee high, and your gaze fixed on something ahead of you.  Gradually turn the right palm up and hover it over your left thigh.  Then bend the left arm and hover the elbow directly above the right palm.  Take chin mudra creating a circle between the index finger and thumb.  The tips of the index fingers and thumbs meet, and the other fingers are straight.  Then you can start to outwardly rotate you left hip as the knee drops a little and the foot rises a little.  Next try and gaze through the circle you have made with chin mudra.  Hold for 12 breaths and work to hold for up to 1-2 minutes.  Then repeat on the tohier side.

Symbolism and Practice

In the context of yoga, King Dancer’s Pose symbolises the dance of life and the balance between effort and ease. The “king” aspect reflects the pose’s regal and commanding nature, highlighting the strength and focus required to maintain its form. Practicing this pose can cultivate a sense of empowerment and confidence, enhancing both physical and mental resilience.

Embracing King Dancer’s Pose in your yoga routine can lead to greater self-awareness and balance, both on and off the mat, while celebrating the majesty and beauty of the body’s capabilities.
