How To Clean Your Yoga Mat
There are several way to keep your yoga mat clean; especially if your dog loves to have a good roll around on it! Here are my favourite, natural, suggestions:
- Some mats can be popped into the washing machine. (Do check if yours can be.) Place the machine on a cold wash and add 4-6 drops of Tea Tree (Melaleuca) essential oil to the drum. Melaleuca oil has natural antiseptic and cleansing properties. Hang to dry. (Never put a yoga mat in the tumble dryer!). For an extra treat, add a couple of drops of lavender essential oil. Melaleuca oil also makes a wonderful hand sanitiser and inset repellent.
- If your mat is not machine washable, then you can make up a spray, with 100ml of water to every 4 drops of Melaleuca essential oil, or 4 drops of Lemon essential oil. Lemon is a powerful cleansing agent that purifies the air and surfaces, and can be used as a non toxic cleaner throughout the home. Again this make a lovely hand sanitiser and smells great and is also uplifting and good mood enhancing. Spray and wipe clean with a clean cloth and ensure the mat is dry before using.
- Apple cider vinegar also works wonders. Create a 50/50 solution of cider vinegar and warm water. Wipe down and leave to dry.
- To make you mat smell divine, give your mat a quick spritz of Lemon essential oil or Lavender & Melaleuca, in between deep cleans.
So, rather than wiping your mat down with a chemical ridden commercial cleaner, why not have a go with some essential oils or cider vinegar and let me know how you get on. And when you return to the yoga studio, do feel free to bring your own gorgeously smelling fragrant mat. I’m testing out some new essential oils by doTERRA and enjoying getting to know what they really are capable of. They also smell great. Take care. Faye x
