Earth Mudra: Prithvi Mudra. Creating Security and Connection

Earth Mudra/ Prithvi Mudra

What is Earth Mudra?

Earth Mudra is a hand gesture that is said to strengthen the Earth element within the body, keeping you feeling secure, grounded and connected to your physical body.  We have been using this hand gesture in a comfortable seated position with the back of the hands on our knees, with a focus on Muladhara chakra, the root chakra at the base of the spine and the pelvic floor, which is associated with the Earth element, security and strength.  We have also used it in tree pose, lifting the hands above the head.

What are its benefits?

Some of the benefits, with regular practice [10-20 minutes per day], include:

  • Strengthening the root chakra
  • Making the body and mind more stable
  • Improving self confidence
  • Allaying anxiety and fearfulness
  • Improving body strength
  • Increasing the Earth element in the body
  • Decreasing the fire element in the body, associated with anger
  • Helping to restore equilibrium and trust
  • Allowing us to feel safe and secure

How to do it

The pads of the thumbs press into the pads of the forth/ring fingers, while the index, middle and little fingers remain extended but soft.  The backs of the hands are then placed on the knees, with palms facing upwards.  Sit in a comfortable seated position, such as Sukhasana, or on a chair or kneeling.  This can also been done in your standing postures such as tree pose, to help anchor you.  Breathe in and out of the nose and focus on your breath or on the sensation of the light pressure between thumb and forth finger.  Try and practice where you wont be disturbed.
