One of the first and most important things to do when beginning your yoga practice is centring. All of our yoga classes her at Body Soul Yoga start with this technique. Centring gives you an opportunity to become more focused on what you are doing in the here and now. Just as it sounds, you get connected to your “centre“. When you centre, you become more present and clear about what you are feeling throughout your body. For example, you’ll be able to assess where you feel pain, where you feel energy and where you feel good and comfortable. (Most of us only notice our bodies and how we are feeling when we are in pain). You will also tune in with your natural breath and as you do so the body and mind will become steady and still. You may also be able to increase the spaces between your thoughts. Arming yourself with information about how you feel, physically and mentally, will help you to see what areas are calling out for attention, so that you can use your yoga practice to help you and ease you.
